Students will develop proficiency in skills required for student affairs practitioners. Along with coursework, assistantship and practicum experiences, and structured professional development, various additional opportunities are available for students to expand their knowledge and skills.

Students will understand and practice:
- Critical thinking and decision-making skills to evaluate situations and respond based on a variety of viewpoints
- Problem solving skills to implement necessary changes in professional situations
- Knowledge of educational technology and computer software applications
- Effective interpersonal communication-oral and written
- Conflict mediation skills between individuals and within groups
- Teamwork skills and the ability to interact successfully within peer and student groups
- Facilitation skills of groups and their activities
- Leadership skills- including understanding the leadership styles of self and others and how these styles interact
- Diversity awareness- to work with students and professionals from a variety of backgrounds and lifestyles
- Advising skills for individuals and groups of students in a variety of settings
- Selection and application of appropriate counseling techniques to assist students
- Administration of office function skills- strategic planning, personnel management, and budget development

- Event coordination skills- all aspects of program preparation including room scheduling, developing timelines, budgeting, and marketing
